Introduction
Located within the M25 approximately 20 miles north of London in Bushey near Watford.

Pre-Arrival
Due to our location which is set back from the main road it is easier to reach us by car although we are accessible by train or bus then with a short walk. The nearest station is Bushey (approximately 1 mile away), Watford High Street (approximately1 mile away) or Watford Junction (approximately 1.5 mile away). The local bus stop will leave you with an approximately ½ mile walk to and through our grounds to the 1940’s entrance.

Car Parking & Arrival
There is ample free parking and 3 designated signed disabled parking spaces close to the main entrance to the 1940’s house, the museum and opposite the NAAFI.

There is a dropped kerb or else it is a one step up to the gain entrance.

Main Entrance, Reception and Ticketing Area
The whole of the 1940’s Experience is on ground level. The flooring is predominately vinyl but as you progress through the rooms some are carpeted and some rooms contain rugs as a part of the exhibit.
The ticket office is in the reception which is an open area with no barriers or booths. Someone will be there to meet, greet and be able to direct you as to what is where and how to get there. Site maps are available.
It is well lit by overhead florescent lights.
Doors leading to other areas are of ample width.
We have 1 wheelchair available for loan on request.
Attraction (displays, exhibits, rides etc)
The 1940’s house is divided into 5 rooms off a corridor.
i) scullery, kitchen and sitting room
ii) bedroom
iii) history room
iv) dressing up & 1940’s games room
v) Morrison shelter and Make Do and Mend room
Volunteers will be on hand to liaise with the visitor about the display.
There are a few glass cabinets in these areas but mostly it is a-hands on experience.

Other Locations
The Blitz Building
Accessible by an approximately a ¼ mile walk along a concrete road which is not a smooth surface but is still suitable for wheel / push chairs. Inside there could be smoke and noise at times. Floor surface is concrete. It is dark and on the far side there is a ramp. When opened it is always staffed and a torch is present to help negotiate the darkness if necessary.

The Museum
Located a short walk from the main reception over a car park. Access is via a ramp towards the double entrance doors. Usually one of the doors only is open. If required the other door can be opened too for wider access. Inside is a short corridor with two doors leading off into the two rooms. One door is a narrow single door accessible for most standard wheelchair/pushchair widths. The other is a pair of double doors, again one doors open at all times with he other being opened when necessary. The floor is predominately vinyl and flat other than a gentle short slope in the corridor. There is a mixture of glass cabinets and open displays. Some items are for a-hands on experience, the staff there can explain which as they take you through any questions you may have.

Dig For Victory Garden
A concrete path can walk you through the garden which has vegetable patches either side. Located in this area is the Anderson Shelter. In dry weather it may be accessed by descending the 3 steps down into it.

Public Toilets
There are two unisex toilets located in the entrance foyer just pass the Ticket Office. One if these is a fully accessible toilet.

Catering
Our NAAFI (Café) serves a simple range of hot & cold drinks as well as a selection of sandwiches, crisps, cake and soup.
Access is on the level and the flooring is concrete. One of the double doors would be open although the second door can be fully opened if access requires this.
Tables/chairs can be moved to accommodate wheelchairs/pushchairs if necessary (please see a member of staff).
Lighting is a combination of natural and overhead lights.
Menus are on high level chalkboards and handheld laminated cards situated on the table.

Shop(s)
Our gift shop is located in the main foyer of the 1940’s house by the Ticket Office and is brought out onto a display cart where items are displayed at an average waist height. A member of staff will be there at all times to help with your purchase.

Grounds and Gardens
There are other buildings for other users in the surrounding area as the site is a home for many other groups. Located opposite is the Residential Centre where School and Youth Group stay for a set period of time depending on their booking (closed to the general public not with the group), and then other Hobby and Sport interest groups who rent buildings such as
Lorraine School of dance,
Watford Freestyle Kickboxing,
Watford Silver Band,
South West Herts Model Railway Club
and Harrow Radio Society.
